Bengrove

Bengrove SS of Liverpool was a 3,840grt, British Merchant ship.

She was a steamer built by Craig, Taylor and Co Ltd. in Stockton-on-Tees and was launched in 1910. She was powered by a triple expansion engine and driven by a single screw with approx 342hp .

An animation of a simplified triple-expansion engine.
High-pressure steam (red) enters from the boiler and passes through the engine, exhausting as low-pressure steam (blue) to the condenser.

On the 7th March 1915 when 5 miles NNE from Ilfracombe, North Devon she was torpedoed without warning and sunk by a submarine. The crew of 33 were saved and landed at Ilfracombe pier. The legend states that over 140 vessels went to her aid.

The dive itself can be dark and challenging in depths of 40m, again a torch and DSMB are a must on this dive.
